Why We Need To Highlight And Support BIPOC Businesses

Women remain underrepresented in high-level, highly paid positions worldwide. A 2018 study indicated that women’s gross earnings dropped substantially after their first child and that mothers earned 20% less than men. According to a 2017 study by The Nielsen Company, African-American women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., and the 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report discovered that women of color represented 89% of new women-owned businesses opened in 2019.

Despite these statistics, BIPOC led companies are often looked over in funding, leading many companies to rely on self-financing for their launch, including our beauty brands Bomba Curls, Naturalicious, The Lip Bar OrganiGrowHairCo. Each has its own incredible story — From rags to riches, the first African American woman to hold a patent for natural hair care, and 1 of 3 Afro-Latina natural hair care brands. These women have defied the odds and created quality brands.
